How soon can you start on my kitchen remodel?

When most people think of a kitchen remodel, they picture cabinets going in and countertops being set. The truth is that a beautiful remodel starts long before the first hammer swing. In this video recorded at our Lakewood kitchen and bathroom project, Eben from Keselman Construction Group explains what to expect and how you can help speed things up.

Kitchen Remodeling Timeline: Planning comes first

Eben: “We are currently standing in this beautiful Lakewood kitchen remodel we just completed. Homeowners often ask, ‘How quickly can you start my kitchen and what does your planning process look like?’ When most people think of doing a kitchen remodel, they think of the actual swinging of the hammers and installing the cabinets and countertops. But what people often forget is that there is a whole lot of planning that goes into a remodel like this.”

This home is a perfect example. The formal dining room became the new kitchen. That meant opening the floor plan while keeping the traditional character, widening openings, and relocating systems.

“Looking at timeline, if we keep your kitchen mostly in the same space, you are usually looking at around 12 weeks of planning.”

Construction timeline – what to expect

Once selections are finalized, plans are approved, and materials arrive, the build timeline depends on complexity.

Project typeTypical construction duration
Standard kitchen – fixtures stay putAbout 2-3 months
Full redesign – plumbing and electrical moveAbout 4 months
Kitchen plus added spaces (like a new primary bath)Add time accordingly

Eben: “For a project like this where the kitchen was not here before, we had to move plumbing for the sink, light switches, and fixtures. These are custom cabinets that we cannot measure until walls are framed. We even opened the walls and found furring strips on the exterior walls, so we took it back to basics like framing a new house. Best case for a kitchen like this is around the four month mark once you factor in rough-ins, inspections, and lead times. We also added a master bathroom upstairs, which extended the schedule.”

How homeowners can help speed things up

Eben: “One of the first things we ask homeowners is to give us inspiration for what they are looking for. If you do not know what you are looking for, we will help you figure out your style – down to what you want your cabinets and countertop to look like. Send us your inspiration and Pinterest links. That all helps us get closer to the end goal.”

  • Share inspiration early. Pinterest boards, photos, or notes help your designer dial in your style fast.
  • Make timely selections. Cabinets, counters, plumbing, and lighting have lead times. Early decisions reduce delays.
  • Stay close to the plan. Quick feedback and approvals keep the schedule on track.
